Could jewelry made from computer chips be a potential health hazard?

I create jewelry out of old electronics and computer parts, and one of my friends raised the concern that the heavy metals in them might be potentially toxic because he read something about them getting into groundwater.

Now, I don’t see how a computer chip could be more harmful dangling from your ears than sitting beside you in a computer, but I’m no expert.

Could this potentially be a health hazard?

  • Many computer parts as well as TV parts are made from rare earth minerals. They can be potentially hazardous and that is why they like people to recycle computers instead of having them put in landfills.

Various parts in the computer contain lead and mercury. They also contain other things like cadmium and chromium.

In the computer you do not come in contact with them every day. In a piece of jewelry you are exposed to it every day.

  • Depending on the computer part. Computer chips, microprocessors, etc. should be safe, as they contain very little, if any, lead. Just don’t swallow it, and you’ll be fine.
