  • combustion is the oxidation of carbon (coal), O2 + C = CO2. the source of the carbon can also be hydrocarbons in which case we get water as an additional product, 2O2 + CH4 = CO2 + 2H2O. this is the reaction when burning crude oil, which is a long chain hydrocarbon molecule. you can also burn carbohydrates (food), O2 + C (H2O) = CO2 + H2O

the lightest carbohydrate is Methane, CH4 which is natural gas. as the molecule chain gets longer, it is no longer a gas but becomes a liquid. Crude is a very long chain. hydrocarbons have the formula, CnH2n+2. for example octane (n=8) is C8H18.

  • we burn hydrocarbons produced from crude oil
