  • There are no minimum height requirements for playing safety or any other position… Watch tutorials they have posted on YouTube. Those can help… You can also get your tips from your position coach…. Good luck…..

  • A lot of it depends on the defense you’re running. The defense I played in and coached the most was a 5-2 (or 3-4) invert. The free safety had the second receiver on the weak side, which was usually the tailback or halfback. The FS’s reads were the guard and his man. If it was a running play and the FS had the tailback that was usually the guy with the ball and the safety was right on top of him. If it was a pass the back usually blocked or ran a flair. If he ran a pattern the safety had to cover him man-to-man but most of the time he didn’t so the FS played deep in the middle of the field. It was a great place to intercept tipped passes. If a receiver jumps for the ball in front of you, hit him just under the butt. He’ll do a cute little flip and land on his back. He’ll never want to jump in front of you again.

  • There is no “must be taller than me” cutout like on amusement park rides. You just have to be the best FS on the team to start. Without knowing what defense your team runs it’s hard to be specific. Be aware of the down and distance for a first down. Come up to support against runs – don’t be afraid to get burned coming up because most coaches would rather have an aggressive player. Read the guards; they will tell you if it’s a run or pass. On third or fourth and long play a little deeper and be more cautious.

My HS ran a 5-2 invert most of the time and the FS had the second receiver on the weak side for coverage which was usually the tailback or halfback. He would usually line up 5-8 yards deep. For coverage we would treat the slot side as strong and the TE’s side as weak. If they were in a wing formation that side would be strong. With two TEs we would go by the backfield formation or wide side of the field if they were in a T. Covering the tailback gave you a great read on runs and usually freed you up to play deep “centerfield” on passes. If we ran a 4-4 or 7-1 the safety had the deep middle third of the field and run support. In a 6-5 goal line he was over one of the guards and usually had zone coverage if they passed otherwise he was like a third inside linebacker.

  • My best advice for you this (and every) summer is to eat healthy, exercise by doing weight lifting, and either jogging or going for a long run every day. If you do these things, you will get faster, stronger, and into better shape, which will greatly improve your chances of becoming a successful, top notch free safety in high school football, who could go on to play college football in the future.

BQ: There is no minimum height requirment to play as a safety in high school freshman football.
