Does anybody know what Sainsburys sick pay policy is?

My daughter works 12 hours a week and has done so for a year. She has just had a month off work due to severe illness but has not received any sick pay yet and has not been given an SSP1. She has now gone back to work but still doesnt know if she will get any pay.

  • It should be stated in her employment contract – and it will depend on how she works, and also on her age. Is she under 16? Does she have a fixed hours contract, or is she employed on an as and when needed basis.

If she is under 16 she isn’t liable for National Insurance – and doesn’t qualify for the benefits linked to it. If she has a zero hours contract she wouldn’t get anything unless she was actually working.

  • If she has worked there for more than 6 months they are obligated to pay her minimum wage for the 4 weeks off (for her working hours, 12 hours a week). If she’s worked there less than 6 months but greater than 3 then I think you are only entitled to 1 week’s worth of pay (though I may have made that last part up). Whether or not they pay her anything if she has worked there for less than 3 months I think is up to the company.
