  • Dogs did not evolve in the wild. Dogs were domesticated from the gray wolf and selectively bred in captivity. We still do not know when, where or how dogs were domesticated, but the evidence does suggest that it was probably first domesticated in East Asia. There are reports that dog remains found in a Swiss cave before the end of the last ice age were eaten by people. The possibility remains, however, that those remains may have belonged to wolves rather than dogs. So, it is quite possible that the dog was first domesticated for its meat. Some European countries still eat dogs to this date, and the Germans used to turn to eating dogs whenever there was a food shortage. Only recently did Germany ban the practice by making it illegal, since it is now a prosperous country and since eating dogs is frowned upon by other prosperous countries such as the USA. Hong Kong has banned the practice of dog-eating, but dogs are still eaten in China, Vietnam and a few other Asian countries.

One of the reasons therefore for domesticating the dog may be a ready source of protein. Another reason may be for rodent control. Since humans starting growing crops, the dog may be a good way to keep crop destroying rodents under control. Even in the USA, farmers often use such biological controls as the black rat snake to help keep rodent populations down.

  • You should be talking about breeding of the dog rather than evolution. All domestic dogs come from an initial wild wolf type and have been bred for the characteristics we see today.

The ancestor of all of these was the breeding pair Noah took on the ark years ago.

  • Dogs learned to survive off the scraps of humans.

It is theorized by some that wolves leaned to live with humans. Those wolves that were less agressive were favored. Those wolves that were too agressive were obviously too dangerous and killed. Dogs became useful to humans and those dogs were kept and bred and that is theorized to account for a large number of different types of the dogs. For example, small dogs were bred (intentionally or unintentionally) for rabit hunting. Dogs that were useful for sniffing out prey developed very good sense of smell. Dogs used for protection were big and strong.
