Exterior paint looks more yellow.. trim color?

We are in the process of painting the exterior of our house. We picked a medium tan color that we loved and now that we are more than half way done we have determined it looks too yellow for our taste. The color isn’t bad but with the medium brown trim color we chose it clashes.

I was wondering what color trim would make it seem less yellow? I was thinking a black would help but neither of us is sure which to chose. We DO NOT want white trim. We already have a few white accent pieces on the house. The trim color is for the window trim and the porch railing and it would get dirty too quickly. Any answers would help!

  • Get the color number and go to the paint store. Now hold samples next to it to see the effect. Always look at the sample colors in natural sunlight. Florescent lights in the store give you a false impression. This is why it’s better to take the sample chips home and see them in a natural setting.

  • Perhaps using a grey to grey taupe color with the existing bits of white would help to tone down the yellow color of the structure’s exterior walls. Consider using a black or deep forest green for the front door Although you have indicated no interest in using white as a trim, frequently it is the trim color used on structures with yellow painted exterior walls; see ‘YellowHouse’ link for an example.

  • use a dark green or a Kelly green for a trim
