False “This site may harm your computer” tag?

I get “This site may harm your computer” for EVERY result that I get. Even link to Google.com have that tag under it.

Is it just me or do I have malware which plays weird jokes?

  • I am experiencing the same issue. Google wants me to know that EVERY result could potentially harm my computer. I have cleared the collection of cache and cookies IE likes to keep around and no changes.
I have tried and was unable to recreate the issue on my Macbook. I tried Safari as well as Firefox. After downloading Firefox for my Windows box the issue was magically absent!
Looks like this issue it specifically targeting IE. I was hoping and hoping someone out there would finally break through the fortress that is IE!

  • I had it too and it lasted about 20 minutes. I signed into yahoo for mail, signed out, and when I went back to do Google search, it was gone. Until then, every site was coming up “this site may harm your computer” and when I clicked to open any of them it said “forbidden-something”.
I think there was just something wrong with Google for a minute for a while there.

  • Google is using a web reputation software to mark websites with malware. They must have had a software issue with this which is marking every website with a malware tag. I wonder which web reputation vendor they use or if they have their own version. This incident will probably be in the financial news tomorrow even if they fix it quickly.

  • Seems like it just started today and yes, even Google sites are getting this warning. Problem is, even when it says “you can continue” there is no button to continue or anything else that will direct you to the site other than copying and pasting. Even that has brought frustration because most of the links don’t work.

Sorry Google, Yahoo is my Search favorite for now.

  • It’s a bug on Google’s end, not ours. All we can do wait is patiently wait until they get the matter resolved.

For now, if you must use Google, just copy and paste the url on the the bottom of the link you want to use. Or just use another search engine.

I gotta tell you, it scared me too. But I relaxed once I realized this couldn’t possibly be true. Every single site, minor or major, business or personal, is all malware? It would take a lot of organization and way more than one person to make that happen all at the same time.

  • Same problem here.

Either some very fast spreading malware has spread like wildfire infecting every webserver on the internet (highly unlikely) or Google is reporting false positives.

I’m using KIS 29 (Kaspersky Internet Security) and it’s returned nothing so far.

I hope the problem’s fixed soon, it’s a bit unnerving.

  • My computer is doing this also. If you type Google in your URL bar and go to google, you can type in your search description and hit “google Search” and everything comes up fine without the “this site can harm your computer” messages. Hope that helps until Google fixes the problem.

  • yes, i to am experiencing the problem, thats how i ended up in this spot in cyberspace. last month a hacker took my computer to the cleaners and i had to pay staples $90 bones to purge it which was a pain in the *** seeing as how i lost all my limewire files etc. it might have to do with firefox webbrowser, for now just copy and past the url in the address bar to get around this bullshit. dont sweat it to much, seeing as its happening to everyone perhaps by the end of the day the problem will be fixed.

  • I just ran across the same issue, using Firefox and Internet Explorer. However, using Chrome, none of the search results have that bogus message.

Sounds like an attempt to push folks to use Chrome. Or, like someone said earlier, somebody has goofed on the Google team.

Simply tested Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Chrome (this one not showing the bogus message.)

  • I have the same problem in both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. I thought I had a virus or something and had my mom check it out and sure enough she has the same problem. I can’t wait to see this fixed as it is a pain the @$$ to search with this problem.

  • It looks like a major problem with Google’s anti-malware implementation.
I can’t find any other chat about this on the net. Not even on Google news. I guess it’s a case of “watch this space”. And Try another search engine instead.
    Yahoo / Ask / msn / altavista / hundreds more…

For now, if you simply can’t live without Google, the click the link and copy and paste the url.

Hey! while typing Google have fixed it.

  • Rebooting seems to have gotten rid of it for me. Before I rebooted I saw the problem on IE but not Firefox. Likely causes:

    1. Google released some bad software
    2. Someone hacked Google
    3. Someone hacked Microsoft
    4. Microsoft’s latest patches conflicted with something in Google’s filters

  • I get the same problem using Chrome. What’s worse, the ads don’t get the “may do harm tag.” For example, I searched for backcountry and the link in the search results was tagged, but the ad Google placed did not. That is just dirty.

What happened to “Don’t be evil” ?

  • Oddly, when I execute the search again and again (F5) sometimes the results have this wrong “this site may harm” and other times its as you would expect, i.e. no warning. Keep hitting F5 for now… its definitely a google problem.

  • OMG I had the same problem for all of my clients’ websites. And as a professional web developer, this totally freaked me out. I was very relieved to see that Google even had it’s own website flagged… which means it’s most certainly on Google’s end. Whew!

  • I just called a friend (who’s an IT pro) to ask him about the “This site may harm your computer.” warning message, and he said it is likely that Google has been hacked and suggested that I use other search engines until Google fixes this.

  • I just uninstalled my google toolbar and it started happening to me, I thought I broke the internet. I’m sure it will be fixed promptly. I never realized how dependent i’ve become on google for my web browsing. I feel so dirty now.

  • I’m getting it too. Apparently whatever list they compare search results to known malware sites gives them “badware=true” for every result.

It can’t be intentional, and they must be working on it. I’m temoprarily using, <shudder>, msn search.

  • Right! I’m getting similar thing for last half an hour. Must have something to do with google search mediation/filter server. It’s webmaster tool is working fine.

I think google knows about it and will fix it ASAP.

but now the problem is remain unchange.

    google is hack i think

  • I’m getting it too, and another thing is that it says if you want to continue you can, but there is no way to continue. So in effect, Google is just shut down for me.

  • omg i just searched this up thank GOD I’m not the only one. I Belive that Google is just having a trip right now and the problem will probably be fixed VERY shortly as Google is one of the most searched websites on the internet.

Ok Update: 10:20 Google is up and running fine everyone enjoy! And if not just simply go to your tools and settings on your browser and delete all the cookies and Temporary Internet files. It’s funny how much we all depend on Google we don’t even realize it! Like I just type my website address in there all the time lol : )

  • Yes friends, mine is better too! It was google through and through, I use two programs to search, Microsoft explorer, with google search engine and Chrome which is google (and an excellent program)
    We live and learn.

  • i was coming here to ask about this too, i get that too.

i even searched google and the results came up that google.com also -n”Warning – visiting this web site may harm your computer!”

  • I got the message in all my links too. I’m using Mozilla Firefox in Ubuntu. I’ll try IE on my Vista laptop to see if the problem happens there as well.

At least I know I’m not the only one experiencing the problem!

  • Mine too. Every single google result comes up with “This site may harm your computer”. It’s obviously something at google’s end, nothing to worry about – I’ve switched over to Yahoo for my searches for the time being.

  • Same here. Thought I was going crazy. It’s definitely a Google problem that’s just cropped up. It’s not a browser thing, since all my browsers show the same behavior. Yahoo search is just fine.

  • Crazy. It happens in both Firefox and Safari but for some reason Internet Explorer still works.

Definitely Google has gone **** up:
