  • Okay, first of all you need to be REALLY AWARE of what you feed your ferrets and why… In ALL ways (not just their diet) they are a HIGH MAINTENANCE pet, so you REALLY NEED to be aware of how to PROPERLY take care of them! (I only add this, because if you don’t know how delicate their diet is, then you probably don’t know all of their other needs, so I also suggest that you do some THOROUGH research into ALL OTHER areas of their care!!!)

    Ferret facts:

    * They are carnivores (which means they can only eat meat or meat based products). They also need a HIGH QUALITY kibble (which hopefully you are giving them!) which NEEDS to be high in GOOD QUALITY nutrients… this is because they have an INCREDIBLY SHORT intestine, which means they need to get as much nutrients as possible, within a short amount of time.

This also means that if you feed them low quality foods, it will be likely that they’ll either die from the lack of nutrients, or will also likely get stomach blockages, due to the fact that they aren’t able to properly digest their food (so basically all of the crap stuff won’t break down, so it’ll just stay trapped).

    * There are some meats and other foods that are not only bad for ferrets, but can also be TOXIC to them (like corn and pork)! – So you NEED to know what types of foods are acceptable or not!

    * Chicken is a MUST HAVE as it contains taurine, which is an ESSENTIAL must have in their diet!

    * Ferrets are VERY finicky eaters, so it is best to get them eating as many different types of healthy foods and kibble brands as possible (just in case the brand you use changes the recipe or stops making the food that you use).

    * You should learn how to make a high quality duck soup (this isn’t actually duck soup, and in fact very few recipes actually use duck… it’s named after the ferret who first needed it), and give it to your ferrets at least once a month (usually as a treat), because if your ferret gets sick they may not be able to eat solid foods, and this will help them to get the nutrients that they need!

As for whether you can feed them human foods or not, the answer is no. There is usually too much salt and/or sugar, not enough nutrients, or has the wrong types of fat, which will end up making them SERIOUSLY sick!

I should also mention that dog and puppy food is VERY BAD as well, not to mention all cat foods, and most kitten foods as well (only the premium brands are generally acceptable… but not everyone agrees with this statement)! I’d also stay away from cat treats as well, just in case!

Like I said, ferrets are a HIGH maintenance pet, and believe it or not I’ve only told you a VERY SMALL fraction of how to PROPERLY take care of them!… So make sure that you do some THOROUGH research, as there is a LOT of bad information out there on how to properly take care of them!

To help you get started, here are some websites that I found helped me a huge bunch when I first got my ferrets:

    * http://www.ferret-world.com/ (The woman who runs this website also does informative youtube videos, under the username PartyFerret)

    * http://moredooks.herobo.com/search.php?chart=ferre…

Oh, and I just remembered; if your ferrets are kits (babies), then you’ll need to do some extra thorough research into how to care for them, as kits are not only harder to care for, but also have extra dietary requirements that you’ll need to know about!!!

Lastly, I say this not because I don’t think you’ll be able to manage having ferrets as pets or because I am hoping for the worst, but just in case you find that ferrets are more than what you bargained for in a pet… if you find that you don’t want or can’t properly take care of your ferrets, then take them to a ferret shelter. Due to the fact that they are a difficult pets to take care of, only ferret shelter know how to care for them properly!

I’m sorry if I’ve given you more information than what you wanted, or if I’ve made any wrong assumptions, etc… it’s just I love ferrets soooo much (seriously, out of all the pets that I’ve had (which has been a fair few) they are my FAVOURITES!!! XD) and I wouldn’t want yours to go without! =)

I hope this helps, and good luck! =)

  • No no no you cannot give them human foods!

Processed meat has too much salt sugar ect and is not good for ferrets!

Ferrets are strick Carnivores And should only eat their ferret kibble and whole pray

Whole pray you can feed your ferrets:

    Day old chicks

    Mice

    Rats

    Rabbit

You can also feed them insects

    Meal worms

    Crickets

    Cockroaches

Basically any thing you feed to a reptile you can buy these whole pray from a pet store that sells reptiles

you can also feed them egg like boiled egg scrambled egg ect

Never feed a ferret human foods like processed meat or peanut butter

Never feed them Fruits because they can’t digest them

It sounds like you need to do a bit more research on ferrers you should always do loads of reaserch before getting any pet. I recomend you read the book “ferrets for dummies by kim schilling” it’s very good for beginners Or if you prefer just do loads of research online

  • You can’t feed ferrets processed meat, like hotdogs. Raw, unprocessed meat like ground beef and chicken, and things like (FROZEN!) mice from the pet store are good for them (also ferret kibble, but it isn’t as good for them since it has sugars and grains, which ferrets can’t digest easily).

You really should’ve researched more before getting your ferrets xD

  • Unprocessed meat is OK, processed meat is not. So ham slices, bacon, chicken and turkey slices, pepperami, hot dog, baloney are all out. You should also avoid pork.

Cooked chicken, turkey, meat is all fine.

Please do poor research before you kill your poor ferrets. You should have learned all this BEFORE you bought them.
