First guitar lesson, how prepared?

Well I’m 23 and finally going to have my first guitar lesson next week. I’m new.

They aren’t expensive but I’d like to make the best of my weekly 30 mins, so I’d like to ask here:

What should I practice before I go? It’s next week. I can read tab, and play easy stuff that doesn’t involve holding down more that 2 at once. I used to know like 6 or 7 chords but forgot them.

I don’t know what he’ll be teaching me, my primary interest is metal, but I don’t know if the absolute basics are equal within each genre.

Or maybe I should just be reading, if so, what about?

Just trying to make my time spent there least wasteful. Thanks

Update:

Brad, thank you! That’s the answer I was looking for ๐Ÿ˜€

Rolanda…I’m not sure how you got nervousness out of that, I’m more excited and wanting to perhaps learn something now (example, chords) so next week when I go we won’t ‘start’ with chords, but continue onto more of them, or something, ya know?

Least wasteful means what should I learn now, that shouldn’t require teacher’s assistance ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks though.

  • If you merely begin to perform the guitar you then require the very best programs in the marketplace to learn how to play that difficult tool and the very best is Jamorama website, here https://tr.im/3H8qZ

If you are likely to learn the guitar for initially (Or maybe you attempted before and only could not obtain the “hang” of it), then Jamorama is the proper course for you personally because every lesson includes a video to accompany the principles, and when you have removed through a week of lessons, you can get and printing a workout sheet associated with these lessons.

The video instructions explain to you how to perform chords โ€“ the fundamentals of enjoying guitar. You’ll figure out how to play major, slight, 7th, and blank chords. If you don’t know what any of which means, don’t allow it to scare you. It’s all described in detail in the videos.

The best thing about this really is after you receive these principles down, the titles and the technicality just move to the back ground and that you do not genuinely have to take into account it a great deal more โ€“ you can only perform!

  • If you have found a good teacher he will know how to guide you and build on what you have already learned, and with enough time he will help you to adjust and over come any bad habits that you may have picked up.

    I suggest getting and learning:

    – Hal Leonard Guitar Method vol. 1, and make sure that you learn how to read music notation with your teacher

    – Know all of your open major, minor, and dominate 7th chords (open position)

    – Names and numbers of open strings

    – Do you know the Musical Alphabet? (ABCDEFGABCDEFG etc..)

    – Do you know your half and whole steps?

This will be great to know on your first lesson. I hope this helps!
