  • ELOHIM: God “Creator, Mighty and Strong” (Genesis 17:7; Jeremiah 31:33) – the plural form of Eloah, which accommodates the doctrine of the Trinity. From the Bible’s first sentence, the superlative nature of God’s power is evident as God (Elohim) speaks the world into existence (Genesis 1:1).

EL SHADDAI: “God Almighty,” “The Mighty One of Jacob” (Genesis 49:24; Psalm 132:2,5) – speaks to God’s ultimate power over all.

  • Genesis 17:1 – “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.”

Exodus 6:2,3 – “And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the Lord: And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name Jehovah was I not known to them.”

In both of these versus, what is translated into English as “God Almighty” appears in the Hebrew as “El Shaddai”. “El” is the Hebrew word for God. The precise meaning of “Shaddai” is unknown, but some possibilities are Mountain, Destroyer, and Boobies. Since other verses in Exodus talk about God leading the Isrealites by day by a column of smoke, and by night by a column of fire, which is an obvious reference to a volcano, God of the Mountains is probably the best possibility.

Elohim is a more general word for God. It technically means “Gods” as the suffix ‘im signifies a masculine plural. Unlike El Shaddai which only has a few referenced in the Old Testament, Elohim is used commonly throughout. Examples are:

Genesis 1:26 – “And God [Elohim] said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”

Exodus 3:4 – “And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God [Elohim] called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.”
