guinea pig with hay stuck in corner of his eye?

my guinea pig likes to tip his hay all over himself, and yesterday i noticed a tiny peice of hay stuck somewhat in the inner corner of his eye, i dont think its right on his waterline but just right next to it, i couldnt remove it with my fingers so i had to use eyebrow pluckers to pull it out then it started to bleed and about 5minutes later it stopped bleeding but i can see a bit of blood around the waterline of his eye, im pretty certain it was close to the inner corner of his eye and not actually in his eye but i couldnt be 1% it doesnt appear to be swollen and hes not squinting and looks pretty normal besides the bit of blood, he doesn’t seem effected by it and hes eating like normal, will he be okay? could it of hurt his eye?

  • It’s pretty common for pigs to get hay in their eye. You did the right thing trying to remove it. However, since you’ve noticed some red and bleeding it’s best to have him seen by a vet. He will probably get some antibiotic eye drops to keep away any possible infections. The reason you want to be proactive on this is if he were to get an infection it can easily spread in a short period of time. Untreated hay poke injuries have been known to require surgery to remove the eye (a much bigger hassle than getting eye drops).

PS I don’t work with any vet and I don’t have anyone else paying my vet bills like Jim mentioned. This advice is given based on the link above (which cautions you go to the vet if you see any red from a hay poke) and reading multiple personal accounts such as these:

  • That happened to my guinea once, but I didn’t try to pull it out.

Hmmm, it might not be blood, but maybe just red around the waterline from irritation (the waterline of any living creature is very sensitive).

If it doesn’t seem to be bothering him, it is probably okay. Usually when something is wrong with those pigs, they let you know 😉

If you’re really worried, bring him to a small animal vet. They’ll know way better than me.

  • Keep on eye on it. Next time, you shouldn’t try to get it out yourself. Just like when something gets in your eye, your eyes make tears and eventually whatever is in the eye will come out.

  • Poor thing! Please call the vet’s. If it’s late there are emergency numbers you can call.

If money is a problem, most of them will let youmake payments or can work with you. I wouldn’t remove it myself if I were you. Poor guy… definitely get him to a vet’s
