I’m trying to make some black and white photocopies with my Epson Stylus SX438W printer and it has stopped me doing so because it claims that I need to replace the colour cartridges. As far as I remember I haven’t even used the colour ink very much and all of a sudden it is ordering me change all 3 colour cartridges. Funny how all 3 run out at the same time huh? So this is going to cost me about £20 just to carry on using the black ink cartridge that I replaced recently. So basically Epson are saying ‘you can’t use your printer unless you give us £20’. Does this actually sound fair to anyone?
I looked online about resetting the chips in the cartridges but I can’t find anything about my model SX438W

With most printers, you are required to have ink in both the black and color ink cartridges in order to print in black as color ink is needed in this process. They work in conjunction with each other. So you will need to have the both usable color and black ink cartridges with ink, the same thing applies for color. It also is used as a lubricant that also helps to prevent print head damage.
In the printer driver, there is an option for “gray scale” printing. That
should use only the black cartridge , but you also will need a usable color cartridge installed for that option as some color ink is also used.
I have a Epson stylus 1290 ….. so don’t know if it the same…

At the top you will see different options make sure its on main and then select your colour…
You have to do this every time you wish to print in black or it will automatically use your colur cartridges to make black hence why you havw no colour. ..

i think it only prints in color only because it has 4 cartidges……….other printers have 5 and the 5th one is black
