How can you distinguish wild ginseng root from cultivated roots?

Once the roots have been cleaned and dried, how can you distinguish them apart? (Roots from the Ohio, PA, WV, KY area.) Thank you!

  • The cultivated roots don’t have the gnarled, forked appearance of the wild roots, which is what makes them so desirable in oriental medicine, and why wild ginseng bring a higher price per pound. Wild roots are also darker in color, lighter in weight, and have concentric growth rings.
