how do i change the outlet that my light switch turns on?

I am renting a condo and I cannot change the wiring, but the bedroom light switch is wired to the worst possible outlet in the room. Is there any way to change the outlet it goes to without re-wiring?

  • Have to agree with Jeff.

My home, the living room has six outlets. Five of them were hooked to the switch by the door. Only, each outlet had one hot plug and one switched plug (at each outlet). That was accomplished by breaking a tab between the upper and lower outlets. A black wire (always hot) ran from outlet to outlet to outlet – to all five outlets. A RED wire (hot when switched) also ran outlet to outlet to outlet – to all five outlets. I only wanted two outlets controlled by the light switch, so in the remaining three outlets I had to disconnect the red wire and cap it, and replace the outlet with new ones that hadn’t had the interconnecting tabs broken off. That way when I hooked the black wire to the hot side of the outlet both plugs were always hot.

Like Jeff said, if someone had the forethought to run the additional wire to the rest of the outlets then you can move the switched outlet. BUT, and I warn you of this, if you have any electrical problems and possibly start a fire YOU will be held responsible. The only way to avoid that is to have a licensed electrician do the job – even though it is as simple as pouring sand in a box. You ALSO need the owners permission to “Alter” the wiring. Failure to do any of these things will result in YOU being held accountable should something ever go wrong.

Since you’re renting I’d suggest either you discuss this with the landlord OR just get a long extension cord and put the lamp where you like and just plug into the controlled outlet.

    Hope this helps.

  • Sorry, no it normally can’t be done, They normally switch the outlet closest to the switch to use the least amount of wire possible.

The only remote possibility that I can imagine is if the outlet being switched isn’t the outlet closest to the switch you could find that they ran the “switch leg” through the other outlets in the pathway, You would see an extra wire connector, on a wires probably colored red. Then you could change it to any receptacle in that path. Just break the tab on the side of the receptacle with the short blades, add a short piece or wire between the wirenut on the red wires and the part of the receptacle that became disconnected when you broke off the tab. There could be other reasons for an extra red wire, you should use an electrical tester to verify operation before actually changing any of the connections.

  • There’s a small chance that it can be done. It’s possible that the switched wire was run to multiple outlets but only connected in one place, in which case it could be done without re-wiring.

  • There are specifically methods that lights fixtures are under pressure out to the swap. the right way is to have skill on the easy electric powered container and a single pair of wires feeding the swap. in case you have this setup then you certainly connect the black cord on the junction container with a marrette to the black cord that travels to the swap. on the swap the skill arrives on the black cord and is sent as much as the easy on the White cord. So interior the easy container you will connect the easy fixture independent to independent (white) and the easy fixture black to the white coming from the swap. (in this one particular case, white isn’t independent, yet is the switched skill for the easy)
