How do I clean "Unnecessary disk space?"?

I have installed the Ubuntu version 9.04, Jaunty Jackelope, using a rewritable disk, also know as a CD-RW. I had deleted any information from the disk, making it blank, and then had great Internet, after installing a few plug-ins. I then fully installed Ubuntu, got rid of Vista, and then proceeded to have great Internet. I then, not on purpose, filled up the blank space on the hard drive with Ubuntu operating system files and information. Soon, my internet slowed down. I then proceeded to reinstall plugins, but that didnt work. Now, my computer cannot download a single file, because all of the disk space and memory is used up. I did a disc space scan, and found only the tiniest shred of a megabyte of free space. I have no idea why Ubuntu would take up so much space, and slow down the computer so much. Also, because of this problem, I cannot download anything to help me. What do I do? Please be very specific.
