  • Read anything and everything. Think about what you read. Does the writer have something to say? Why does the writer think it is important to put this material in writing? Do you agree or disagree with the stated point of view? Why? Is there an equally compelling argument disagreeing with this view? That’s an intellectual approach to self-education. Learn to do things with your hands–that’s a workmanlike approach. Discover and develop your talents whatever they may be. Read and think and do, you’ll achieve what you want, and be a little skeptical.

  • Read.

The library is there waiting to teach you any subject you want to know. Ask the librarian to show you how to find the experts in any subject and beginning texts. Check the bibliography and footnotes in those books and read the books the author used to write the first text.

Even if you are in high school, go to university web sites and look for experts in any subject. Read the books those professors have written and read the ones they have their students read. (One the pages that have class offerings, if you go to the prospective describing each class, the professor will list the required texts for each class. You won’t find the outside readings, but the required texts are a good starting place. Again, you can look for the experts each author cites and work your way back in this fashion.)

Many colleges and websites offer college reading lists. These are works of literature that educated adults in this society should know or at least have heard of, understanding the cultural illusions those works represent. For instance, you might not read all of Shakespeare’s plays or sonnets, but if you read a couple of each, you would get a feel for why he is held in such high regard and why he is still quoted in modern society. Look up these lists and dip into them. Most of these books are on the lists because they are simply very good books and have held up as good reads after decades and centuries.

If you learn how to do this sort of research, and allow your curiosity to guide you, you will be a life-time learner.
