How do I know exactly what I need from my Windows.old file?

I’ve recently upgraded from Windows XP to Windows , and have discovered a massive file called Windows.old which contains everything I had in XP. I would like to get rid of it, as it’s taking up more memory than it should, but I’m not entirely sure what I need from it. Do I drag all program files? Also, even if these files are in windows.old, do they still run from this file?
