How do I play grace notes on piano?

  • There are basically two forms of grace notes on piano, Appoggiatura and Acciaccatura.

Appoggiatura are played in rapid succession, sometimes they can be played with one finger sliding from a black key to the white above (or below). However, I think they _should_ be played with two fingers in rapid succession. The grace note is played on the beat of the main note, with the main note following close behind. Appoggiatura are written as a small-sized short value note slurred to the main note.

Acciaccatura (from the Italian “to Crush”) are two notes played pretty much at the same time, on the beat of the main note, with the “grace” note released almost immediately leaving the main note to ring out. Acciaccatura are indicated with a slash through the stem (and flag(s)) of the grace note.

Neither form of grace note has a time value within the music.

  • You have to be really quick in doing it, but I can’t explain. I play the piano, and I’m really good at it. It’s like two notes: press note #1 and then #2 then back to note #1 really fast, but they have to be right next to each other.

  • The easiest way to play grace notes is to use your wrist to help. Start with the first note but quickly transfer the weight of your hand/arm onto the second note. This prevents the sound from sounding harsh.
