How do I turn a bright white shirt off-white?

i bought a light-weight cotton (or is it linen? i never really learned my fabrics) shirt and I was wondering, is there an easy way to turn it off-white?

thanks

  • Yes if it is a natural fibre like cotton or linen and it will be permanent.
Make a batch of weak tea…..use a scrap of white fabric, or try to use a paper towel to test the tea. Dip the fabric in the tea, squeeze it out and let it dry, or place it in the sun for a bit to dry. If it is the color you want then warm up the tea in a pot big enough to be able to stir the shirt in the pot. Wet the shirt and wring it out a bit. Dip the shirt in the tea and stir it for about 5 minutes. Keep the shirt moving in the tea bath or you will get streaks. When it is the color or the time is up, pour it into a sink full of cool clean water. Rinse and drain the water at least 3 times. Then if it is perfect you can wring it out and let it dry, or place it in the dryer. It is an experiment so I would advise you to test first.
