How do you reduce nose weight of a boat trailer?

I have a current nose weight of 97kg on my boat trailer which is too much. My car is the latest subaru legacy with a 82kg nose weight limit. How do I reduce this nose weight on my trailer?
Cheers

  • Some trailers have a movable axle. Moving it a very few inches forward will often reduce the tongue weight. OR, you might need to move the bow-stop back a few inches so the boat sits back a little further on the trailer.

You should use caution, or have your dealer make the adjustments, as you need sufficient tongue weight to control the trailer. To light can lead to control issues.

  • While the other answerers all give you good advice ( move the boat aft a bit , load the back end of the boat , move the axle slightly forward )

The reality of the situation is that your extra 15 Kilos on the nose weight is so marginal that it realy doesn’t matter .

ALL these things are estimations and approximations , and in reality land , a slight nose heaviness of this degree will not matter a good goddam .

Its the difference between you having a single 25 kilo bag of cement in the trunk , or not having that in there . Relax .

  • The proper tongue weight of the trailer should be between 9-15 percent of the Gross Trailer Weight (GTW). Without the proper weight down on the trailer ball you can have a dangerous situation called trailer sway.

If your vehicle cannot handle the proper tongue weight of the trailer GWT then it’s probably reasonable to ask yourself – “Should I be towing with this vehicle?” There are other people on the road and if you’re towing an oversized load (for the vehicle) then your putting yourself and others in danger.

You have to control and stop the load…

  • Since the Legacy tows between 15 and 18Kg max depending on model you will have to take car when balancing your trailer that you do not exceed the towing capacity of the car.
You need to either move stuff around in the trailer or move the boat on the trailer unless you have an adjustable axle.
A decent tow car will handle a 97Kg nose weight.

  • It’s simple physics surely ? weight distribution, the same principle as when towing a caravan when you load the car and van in such a way that the outfit rides level, rather than scraping the hitch / A frame on the rd with the front wheels off the ground..
In your case load the boat, not your car boot, weight in the rear of the vessel will relieve some weight from the hitch.
    Should you be towing?

  • First check out the design to see how the axle is connected to the mainframe – some are held on by U bolts and are adjustable – moving the axle forward will balance the trailer better.

If not then you could always add some weight to the back of the trail (or boat if fitted).

    Simple physics really

  • You did not say what type of vessel, so move the batteries, anchors, fishing gear and what-nots to aft.
    /fixed.
    Have fun.
Seriously, put air shocks on that rear axle of the car and is fixed. You can add a tow bar, is a Class ? hitch for towing, those bumper tow setups are just failures waiting to happen.

  • You can move the trailer axle forward, or move the winch toward the rear of the trailer so the boat is farther back on the trailer.

  • extend the toung of the trailer, should reduce weight other wise get a buddy or pay someone with a truck to tow you, good luck!

extend tounge or call someone with a truck

  • The easiest thing to try first is to load the boat 3-5 inches back on the trailer if this works move the bow stop back and you should be good. http://www.captainraymonds.com

  • Pack what you can into the stern of the boat to cause it to lift the bow.
