I just stained my wood banisters but I don’t know how many coats of clear varnish for a top coat to put on. I have so far put on two. Do I need to do more than that? These are inside banisters for stairs.

Three coats of clear and sand in between each coat.
use coats of sanding sealer-sand after each coat- plug nail holes and then apply varnish- that’s the way we do it for new construction.
