  • In Texas there is no deposit/refund system, so one sells aluminum cans to scrap yards only as salvaged metal. Currently, in a nearby town where the buyer gives the “best” price in reasonable local driving distance, the cans bring about 58 to 60 cents per pound. (The metal in aluminum cans is now much thinner than it use to be, so that on average, considering the various sizes of beverage cans, around 33 cans equal a pound, or 1.75 cents per can.)

Plastic bottles are not redeemed here, so you have to take them to GIVE to a recycling center if you do not want them in the local landfill. (Since I recycle my trash and the center is a mile and a half away, I benefit in that I do not have to pay for trash pickup.)

  • In Cypress, TX, you paid $12 a month for the curbside recycling pickup, the charge was on your water bill. They do not pay you, their business model is to charge you for the removal of the recyclables, if they can sell the recyclables then great but if the market is glutted which it often is, the recyclables go to the land fill.

If you want to be paid, you need to go to a State with a deposit law.

If you want to recycle, you buy products made from recycled material, you become a smart consumer, that’s recycling. Recycling bins are collection not recycling and the bins only lower the cost of manufacturing from recyclables and that lowering of cost is by not paying you for the recyclables.

  • I don’t know how many cans are in a pound. Where we live it is 10 cents per can, a refund on $ paid when purchasing. 5 cents for juice containers and 2 cents for the wee juice boxes. 10 cents for liquor/beer bottles. 5 or 10 cents for water bottles depending on size.

I never return payable recycling. We donate it to the high school for the kids to have field trips or sports.

  • It depends on where you live. Some states do not pay for recycling bottles/cans. You will have to look up recycling in your area.

  • A pound, huh? Well, 28 Coke cans make a pound, so if they can all be redeemed, you will receive about $1.40.
