you are no longer required to enroll in a professional driving school (drivers ed) before taking your learner’s permit test. To take the DMV test for your California learner’s permit, you must be at least 15 ½ years old. you may apply for your provisional California drivers license if you are at least 16 years old and have held your California learner’s permit or California instruction permit for at least 6 months.
