  • A race boat? The pontoon is a grand idea, the empty bottles is also, but that is a raft, not a Race Boat, vrm!
I think a canoe type design would be fast. The toon boat should be stable, lets go with that.
6 people, erm, 6 Adults? it matters.
Home made materials, in early 19s I could easily build that, today, may have to go with the animal water bottles.
Sounds like a fun time is to be had, so go safe, go stable and go fAST!
Pontoon wins the race, a 20′ L 8″ PVC pipe, and four end caps, cut the pipe into two 10′ sections, put the end caps on, with PVC glue. Then you can use a two 4×6 plywoods as a platform/deck.
Cut a few strategic holes in the ply-board and run some come alongs, those are adjustable tie down straps. Done and done.
No nailing, bolting, easy to assemble and easy to transport.
Is basically just 2 10′ Long pipes, 8″ Diameter. You can most likely float it on 6″ pipes, that is where the weight comes in.
I have seen vessels of that design ina few Near Shore races, near shore means like swimming areas.
We made a pirate ships one time, I have seen a few pontoon types that did very well.
    Have fun, wear a PFD.
Make a paddle wheel pontoon boat, that would be ideal.
  • Copy a standard WW2 type bridging pontoon , made using a single sheet of 8 x 4 ply , 8mm thick should do , for the bottom , slit another lengthwise to make two sides 8 x 2 , cut a third sheet into two @ 4 x 2 to make the transom and the bow bulkhead , then cut a 4th sheet to make the rising curved bow sides and bottom , and use the 4 x 4 offcut of sheet # 3 to form the foredeck . attach the bow to the box main section .

frame it all with 2 x 2 nominal planed all round , and fix it all together with 1 ” woodscrews and No-Nails exterior grade glue .

  • collect all the empty square or rectangular PET drink bottles you can get. Tape them together tightly with duct tape into planks. ( piece of flat timber each side may help hold them straight. Use the planks to make your boat. Each 2l bottle will support about 1.5kg (actually 2kg but the joining gear takes some of this) so for a 60kg person you need about 40 empty bottles if you just make araft up. If you can make a boat that is water tight (duct tape again) so that you can sit in it yo will need fewer bottles because te volume you’re sitting in adds to the buoyancy.(I’d still use the 40 bottle/person though as a safety measure)
