“I can’t afford to live in London, so guess what? I don’t”, is this a good philosophy?

If London’s house prices are too expensive, shouldn’t people just leave – inspired by the genius of QT….

  • We left London because we were fed up with the congestion and the pollution, they were building houses on every sliver of green but still it has always been government policy to cram more and more people into the area!

It doesn’t make sense to live beyond your means, London is surrounded by dormitary towns where people live but commute into town if they are working, it is the only sensible option for some but simply adds to the congestion.

I actually applauded when Maggie offered businesses bribes like low tax and business rates to move to the North it could have provided valuable jobs and eased the pressure on the South East which is no longer a pleasant place to live, what a pity the Blairite government didn’t continue down the same road!

FOR THE POLITICALLY CORRECT LEFTIES FOLLOW THIS LINK AND SEE WHO THE REAL SLUM LANDLORDS ARE!

The rich landlords are a myth, the buy to let boom happened during the Blair years, most of the buyers were just ordinary folk trying to create a nest egg for their old age but they were ripped off on the property prices and the amount of rent that could be realised!

There are loads of housing association properties in London and the rents are very cheap compared to the private sector, there are some who have deliberately moved into very large houses in areas like Belgravia and St John’s Wood and the local council’s have been muppet enough to pay for it on SS, they are not normal average houses, that kind of exploitation at the opposite extreme has to stop!

In fact it has to stop at both ends!

  • Yes.

    Absolutely.

Why pay people to live where they want to but can’t afford to?

  • It’s not as simple as that though, families have jobs, mothers and Fathers work, children are in school, they have Homes and Mortgages, Friends, Family, it’s not easy to just leave where you live behind, it’s easy to be black and white with such think as an outsider looking in, but there is a grey area which many people find themselves in.

  • There’s a silver lining in every cloud. If the cities of the world get nuked at least you won’t be there.

  • Yes.

    Tell people on benefits.

  • Each case should be looked at individually
what about if you work their have family there and have a life their , what if you have an elderly parent who needs your support
should people see a lot less of their families some of who may help with childcare or and give up their job ?
why should just asylum seekers /immigrants have human rights
This is about money and conservatives who wasted 10 million pounds on wednesday

  • Yes, that sounds like an excellent philosophy; or you could wait to move into London until you can earn more.

  • It must be a fantastic relief to get out of the mad hustle and bustle of London. Why anyone would want to live there is beyond me. I live in the ancient city of Chester, it can be a bit of a pain at rush hour and it can get a bit lively on a Saturday night, other than that it is a fantastic place to live. If I was to list all the places I would like to live, London would be near the bottom, second thoughts, London would be at the bottom, despite all its attractions.

Edit:I just knew the right wing Tory in a hat would have to make a political speech.

  • Yes, but we do need to have some very special people living there, our ambulance, fire and police forces, doctors, nurses etc.

We DO NOT however need to have mrs whateverhernameis who is claiming refugee status having boarded a plane in Afghanistan, Nigeria or anywhere actually where their border is not immediately next to ours, who then demands a home in our capital, paid for by us!

Won’t be long now, Mrs. May has got the bit between her teeth but it takes a long time to get things like this past socialists like Miliband, Balls, Brown and Blair as they like multiculturalism!

  • You can not live beyond your means, you can’t live a Champagne lifestyle on lemonade means, you know it makes sense.

  • I could live very well in Spain,on my London income, would the government help ?
    Moving exes,and rent ?
    Tomorrow ?
No longer living in London, but IF ?

  • If you are British you will be part of an ethnic minority in London so why bother. As Helen S said they only want important workers so there would be no place for you there anyway. You would be taking up the place of a hard working family of Nigerian asylum seekers or a Romanian pimp. More British need to move away from London to make room for people like them.

  • Spoilsport. I haven’t watched QT yet. I don’t live in London, because I have no connection with the place and it seems to take an extra long shower to get the place off my skin, after I’ve visited.

I think it’s quite strange that the right want their cake and eat it, as far as London goes. In a previous episode of the right wing CE show, the excuse was that the poor where leaving London due to “ethnic cleansing”. The simple fact is that people are pushed out of their home town, by the cost of living there.

It shows how awful things are, when the price dictates that people need to leave.

Don’t get me all wrong. I think London is a fine place, with fine people, but I’m a small town country lad and city life drives me crazier than I am already. I just think London is a victim of it’s own excess. That is excess that should have been the success of the entire nation, but for the myth of Dick Whittington.

I think people should stay if they want to. It’s their home.

Edit. Yes, I’ve seen that before D. It’s at the extreme end of scummy landlord. I don’t think they are run by housing associations, or councils though. And?

  • I saw that response on QT and i agree with her. sometimes the truth is hard to swallow for some people but its still the truth none the less. People have to live with in their means whether working or on the dole, and that comes to the country has well, the country is in a bad state things we took for granted are going to have to change because they are too expensive. and if that means that people on welfare moving to cheaper homes so be it.

  • I remember a while back Tory Westminster shipping off its poor people onto Labour Lambeth, so that the rich hard-working aspirational strivers in Westminster (MPs?) could profit from low Council Tax, while Lambeth got stung for a fortune to pay for social services.

Here we have a rich city parcelling its problems off onto the provinces, so that the capital can get even richer. Isn’t this what Osborne is dedicating his political life for?

I do think there is some merit in her argument, and I have left London behind long ago. I see no reason to support anyone who does not have a family connection with London, or who does not offer a vital service which the city rewards too meanly. Asylum seekers can be quite happily sent off to Gateshead, or somewhere similarly cheap and safe. Adult children with no particular family commitments could quite easily go off to seek their fortunes away from the nest, unless they have caring commitments – say to elderly relatives – that require them to be there.

Those who do have a connection to London, and for whom commuting to and fro to their roots would cause hardship should either be supported in suitable housing, or they should be allowed a subsidised season ticket paid for from those in London who can well afford it.
