  • Your best bet is if your still on porbation. Here in Hawaii (and typically across the country) your probation officer will work for you to help you find gainful employment. Especially since for many probationers having a job is one of the terms of their probation. You can also try the Salvation Army which recently has started new programs employing probationers and parolees in various service industries.
  • Definitely! You just have to be qualified for the type of position that you’re seeking and really put yourself out there–go to every interview you get, e-mail your resume and a cover letter to anyone you’d be interested in working for, etc. Just keep marketing yourself and your skills and experience, and most importantly–DON’T GIVE UP! Some employers will do a background check, but not all of them will–and some will not care about your background at all, even if they discover that you do have a criminal record. It’s admirable that you want to work in the social services field, and I know that if you have good and pure intentions, then you will be able to find something. In the meantime, you might want to try a “temp agency” or “employment service” or “contract employment.” (You can find lists of these agencies online. They probably all do background checks, but you will be able be honest with them about your record if they find out you do have one.)
