  • July was a little too early to plant tulip bulbs, but not to worry. Even if you planted them in the autumn, they may send up some leaves. Autumn is the best time to plant spring flowering bulbs. The warm soil and cool air allow the roots to get a good start before the ground freezes, without heat stress in the height of summer. Once you get a hard freeze, you can mulch with a good layer of leaves. Come early spring, gently uncover the bulbs, taking care not to break off the new leaves. Even if the weather freezes after you uncover them, don’t worry. They have been doing this for millennia. They know their job and won’t die.
