You can always find a surf school in the area. Here in San Diego we have several. Just do a quick search. At a minimum there’s always some guy with a van teaching a handful of people in most beach areas. We have a great surf school for women out here called Surf Divas but I don’t know if they have anything like that in Florida.
Definitely take a lesson and at a minimum learn the culture and etiquette of surfing. That will go a long way in insuring you have fun and don’t stab any innocent bystanders with the tip of your board.
Have fun and be safe.

Well, if you live on the East Coast, and far enough north to get more than a couple days of waves a year, get yourself to a real surf shop (not a bathing suit store that sells surfboards). Somebody there will help get you into the water. Go for it!
not in the gulf buddy sorry.. try a wave pool or something like that down there man. maybe kite or wind surfing would be fun there too. good luck and be safe.
go to the beach and you will find surfers there they will teach you
