I want to be a flyer in Cheerleading but…?

I really want to be a flyer. I can do a good scorpion and scale, a pretty good heelstretch and bow and arrow, a strong lib and a good arabesque. I am very flexible, and I have been working on my flexibility for ages. But I am 5,3 and 101 lbs. (I am 14) and the rest of my team is kinda short. There are lots of people around my height too but our coach just chooses flyers by height! I mean its important that the back spot will be able to catch the flyer and all but some of the flyers in my team can’t do the moves very well at all! Firstly, do I fit the requirements of a flyer and secondly how do I approach my coach about flying?

I am in competitive cheer in Australia. There isn’t very many squads where i live so changing teams really isnt an option. I love basing, but I dream about flying so much. Its my dream. Please answer? xo

Update:

By the way, the other people on the team aren’t a whole lot shorter than me. Just a couple of inches shorter is the shortest person…

  • You definitely fit the requirements. But With you saying that the girls are shorter than you does make me think your coach maybe right about going by height in this case. You can see if maybe one of the girls who is closest to your height will back spot for you and ask your coach for one shot (that will be your chance to shine and show what you’ve got) Let your coach know you feel as though you would be a really strong flyer and if they could give you something like a “try-out” for the spot. Say you’ve already got “whoever” to backspot for you and you really want the opportunity to prove yourself.

    Hopefully that helps.

  • Take the tallest girl on the squad (other that you if you are the tallest) and ask her to backspot. then take the two strongest girls on your team and ask them to base you. you totally fit the requirments you just need some practice… you wont get it on the first time so DONT SHOW YOUR COACH UNTIL YOU HAVE MASTERED IT WITH THE PEOPLE WHO WILL DO IT THE COMPETITION! i can not stress that enough! go to one of your houses and practice there (with a mat preferably) until its decent. then the next practice ask your coach for one chance… take the girls and show her how good you are! show off up there cause if you dont sell it, she wont buy it.
