It is an extremely demanding sport, but it isn’t popular.
Sports like football, baseball, basketball are popular because it’s possible for Average Joe Couch Potato to understand what’s going on when he watches a competition. There are clear rules, simple scoring systems, very easy to grasp. I think people really need to be able to get their minds around the sport, and they need to be able to understand what’s going on before they can really enjoy watching it.
With gymnastics, Average Joe Couch Potato has no clue what he’s even watching, which is why we get comments like “It’s not a real sport.” Of course gymnastics is unquestionably a “real” sport, but it’s also a rather “difficult-to-understand” sport. I can understand why Average Joe Couch Potato wouldn’t have a good time watching it.
A sport’s popularity has little to do with how demanding or difficult it is. Above all else, people want their sports to be simple. The most popular sports are the very simple sports. Gymnastics is not a simple sport.
