I’m thinking on buying a motorcycle. Whats good start out on and what to look for while buy used bikes?

Looking for a Yamaha or susuki. I don’t know much about motorcycle. I have no idea what to ask or look for when trying to buy used ones on craigslist. Just need some advice.

  • First of all, don’t buy a motorcycle on a whim. It’s a big deal to get a motorcycle. Think about it for a while.

Secondly, get a motorcycle under 6cc (it will usually say a number in the name of the motorcycle ranging from 250 to 15) Get one with less power so you can learn to control it more before upgrading.

Thirdly, since it sounds like this is your first motorcycle, have someone who actually knows something about motorcycles go with you to look at the bike. You may get some surprises buying off of craigslist.

Fourth, (this is just a personal opinion) get a cruiser to start with. I know plenty of people who started with sportbikes, but they already knew a bit about motorcycles. Also, take a riding class.

Again, getting a bike is a big decision, not to be made over the weekend. And don’t go cheap on craigslist, it will end up becoming more expensive if you buy cheap.

And, they’re super fun! Just be sure you learn from someone good. Ride safe!

  • do your research. as for the size of the bike, it’s going to depend on you….. like how much do you weigh, and what style you like. Being inexperienced, i would suggest staying around the 750 and below mark. 750 is the high end of the low powered bikes. I would also go with a stock cruiser instead of going for the cool bobber, chopper, or street fighter. You can start wrenching on your bike after you learn what works for you.

Take along some one who knows bikes. If you cant find someone who knows bikes, take someone who knows cars. Look for any kind of leaks. Ask where and when it’s been serviced and if there are any paper work to show the services. Most sellers wont let you ride with out an endorsement and cash in hand. If you cant ride, don’t buy, so go get your endorsement, or learners permit.

look around on line at the different forums and do some reading. like the first poster said, its not to be taken lightly, or bought on a whim. Find out about classes in your area, and look around for clubs or groups you can hook up with for some safe rides, and good advice.

Also invest in some good protective gear. I suggest an armored jacket, a good full faced helmet, and a good pair of boots. If your allergic to bees throw some benedryl onto your bike somewhere…it saved my wife’s life on a long ride last summer.
