In a pickle with my job, I’m a good employee but need time off.?

The apartment i applied for opened up sooner than I expected, they want me to move in by next Thursday. I’ve got plenty of vacation time, but telling them tomorrow is really going be on such sort notice, I don’t know if I’ll get it. I’ve still got like 4 sick days left, since I rarely ever take a sick day. I’m just wondering what is the best approach. Put in the request or just call in sick for 2 days. I hate to do things like this on such sort notice.

I thought it wasn’t going to open up til mid may not the first week. So now I’m stressing having to pack and clean everything in a week.

  • NEVER call in sick when you are going to be out and about doing something! If you are seen by anyone at your job, you could be fired.

Go in and explain the situation to your boss. I can’t imagine why you would have to be physically moved in by next Thursday. I would think that they just want the rent paid by then, and then you can take your time actually moving in.

So I say again—Never lie about being sick unless you are going to stay home where no one will see you.

  • Well are you sure they want you PHYSICALLY in the apartment or did they mean they just want the downpayment and paperwork completed by then? I can’t see them being concerned with a date you have to physically be living there by. I’d check on that and then hopefully, you can get your time off at work the way you’re supposed to and move in when you have off.

  • It completely depends on your relationship with your boss. I have had bosses I could call and get out of work for a couple days and some I had to lie to. So pick it. Take two days off sick and then go in or explain the situation to your boss. You really know best on this one.

  • be honest and explain the situation at work – do not take a sick day as you would feel bad about that and it may come out. I am sure they will understand at work and be flexible – good luck with new apartment
