In the NHL why would a player be sent to the box without the game resulting in a power play?

For example: In game 6 between the Rangers and Caps today a Rangers player was sent to the box in the third I believe and there was no power play. I was wondering the rule on that.

  • Any type of misconduct penalty, whether it be a 10 minute misconduct or game misconduct doesn’t result in a powerplay. Unless of course there was also a penalty called with the misconduct.

  • You must have just seen something wrong. There were zero penalties on the Rangers today.

Sometimes, though, there will be roughing called on both teams and so instead of a power play there will be five minutes of 4 on 4. Also, with fighting both players that fight receive a 5 minute major, so they’re both sent to the box, but there is no power play and no 4 on 4. 5 on 5 continues, these two players just can’t play.

Perhaps you saw when Dorsett slew footed Mike Green and went off to the locker room because his mouth was bleeding from getting Green’s stick to the face in retaliation. This was supposed to be a match penalty(Rangers lose), but the refs missed it. Only thing I can really think of that you may have mistaken for a Rangers player being sent to the box.

  • Only thing I can think of is fighting. When there’s a fight, each player sits for 5 minutes but the teams remain 5 on 5. I watched that game today too and didn’t realize someone was sent to the box.

  • Odd… Perhaps when they got the penalty, the other team was already a man down making it a 4 on 4?

I’ve never heard of someone going to the box and a team being allowed to keep 5 players on the ice.

Either way, let’s go Red Wings…..
