  • It is a wonderful career! You would already know many of the benefits from working with them since 15 years old- Old people are a delight to work with, their unique sense of humour and funny stories. I worked in an aged care facility for 2 years and it was like have 30 grandmas! I had little jokes with all of them. There was one old man who used to sing me silly old songs, one lady who would always talk to me about he grandchildren, one lady I would sit with and watch Frasier with her whenever I had the time. They are great and I really miss it now that i don’t work there anymore. Ofcourse the actual work is hard- physically and emotionally. You will have to do some un-pleasant jobs (showering, changing incontinence pads, dressing gangrenous wounds…) but the pro’s far outway the cons. You also get to build fabulous relationships with the other nurses you work with. I would highly recommend it and best of luck!!

  • Well with the recent increase in veterans there will be plenty of jobs in veterans’ hospitals. Additionally, with the rapidly aging baby boomer population there will be a demand for nurses in assisted living facilities, private nurses as well as other geriatric services.

You don’t have to work pediatric although it might be a part of your training. If so, it would only be for a short stint and if you discuss your preference for adult and geriatric patient care with your teachers I have no doubt they’ll find plenty of opportunities for you.

  • with your history with kids and elderly, i think it would be great if you will be a nurse someday. i am also a nurse. and not all people who are horrible with kids would not be successful in this career. one more thing is that if you really want it, love it, and sincere with your desire, there is no problem choosing this career. goodluck! and im already congratulating you for choosing nursing.
