Is college useless nowadays?

Im starting college soon and ive been hearing a lot of things. Many people say college is useless nowadays. years ago it was affordable and got you a job quick. Now you have to hunt for it with a degree or not, but if you dont go you pretty much have a head start on trying to set your life up. So i would just like to hear peoples opinions

  • It completely comes down to what career you want and what degree you’re doing. In the past any college education was considered a good thing. Now its not so cut and dry. There are certain degrees that are quite frankly not worth it. How many history graduates does the country need? Or political science? Psychology? The answer is hardly any. Yes those subjects are important, but there is NO job demand for them at all. So if you’re going for some stupid liberal arts degree, then yes college is useless.

If, however, you want a real career then its an absolute necessity.
If you want to become an accountant, engineer, nurse, actuary, programmer, database administrator, financial analyst, etc etc then you have to go to college. No way around it.

The people you hear talking about how “useless” college is are, quite frankly, idiots. They’re probably people who spent big money at a private university for a liberal arts degree. Then they graduate with tons of debt and can’t find a job because they got a useless degree.

College isn’t even that expensive. Yes its more expensive than it was or years ago, but the cost is still VERY VERY manageable if you’re going to a public school and into an actual job field.

-k in debt isn’t that bad when your starting salary is -k (engineers, nurses, accountants, actuaries)
-k in debt is HORRIBLE when your only job prospect after graduating is serving starbucks. (english degrees)

  • If you don’t go to college you may get a “head start” on life but you’re also more likely to hit a relatively low ceiling in your career where you can’t get that promotion or raise that you want because you don’t have a college degree. Then to get that degree you have to go to college when you’re older and have grown-up responsibilities (family, job, bills, etc.) that add a lot of stress and distraction. It can be difficult to get a job for anyone, but there are more jobs available to college graduates than to people who don’t have degrees. I think college is generally useful (even if you major in liberal arts) if you are realistic about what you’re getting into and what you can afford. For example don’t get into debt for an Art major. If you really want a liberal arts major don’t get into massive debt and have a strategy on how to make yourself stand out from other BAs who were just trying to avoid Calculus. And have a backup plan no matter what you get a degree in. With that said, not everyone needs a college education, it depends on what you want to do for a living.
  • it works out for some people but not for others i must say i think it is a risk spending a few years in college with the chance you will not get your desired job. i never went to college and got a minimum wage job but worked my way up a bit and get paid a decent wage. Just do what you feel is best for you having an education is not a must.
  • It depends on what type of job you are looking for. Some jobs require that you have a college degree. I don’t think college is useless, but it’s not necessary unless your desired job requires a college degree.
