Is it true insurance compainies charge more for men then women?

…simply because of there gender? I heard this, and it sounded very disturbing. And if so, how is this constitutional? Wouldn’t it be gender discrimination?

  • Most states, yes – men pay more for car insurance and life insurance, women pay more for health insurance. In the two states that don’t allow gender discrimination, EVERYONE pays the higher rate.

I think you don’t understand what discrimination is. Discrimination is telling the difference between two things. When you walk into a restaurant, and order a coke instead of a glass of sour milk, THAT is discrimination. Not all discrimination is illegal.

Men don’t have babies, should they be required to pay for maternity coverage? Women live longer, should they pay the higher life insurance rates? Older people get sick more often, have cancer more often, should younger people pay the same for health insurance as they do? Any insurance company that offers more than one rate, MUST “discriminate” to figure out who gets the higher rate, who gets the lower rate! Who gets the maternity coverage, who doesn’t. Who has the crappy driving record, who has a clean driving record.

If you want to pay less for your car insurance than someone with five DUI’s and three accidents; if you want to pay lower taxes than Bill Gates; if you want to pay less for your house insurance than someone with a mansion; then you, too, believe in discrimination.

  • I can only speak for life insurance, but the answer is yes. It is not gender discrimination. The insurance rates are calculated based on mortality rates of humans (among other factors). Historically, women live longer than men. So that means men pay higher rates because their lives are shorter. Women, on the other hand, pay for a longer period of time. In the end, depending on how long the life span is, women may pay more in the long run.

  • 1. For car insurance, yes.

    2. It is Constitutional because the Constitution allows gender discrimination in everything except voting. Gender discrimination in voting is the only type of gender discrimination that is not Constitutional. All other gender discrimination is Constitutional. Yes, it is gender discrimination, but it is not related to voting, so it is Constitutional.

  • It is not true that insurance companies charge more for men then they do for women simply because of gender. Differences in premium charged depend on risk. A women in her 20’s pays a lot more than a man does for health insurance because in general health care costs are more for a woman than a man.
