Is it true that Americans don't put salt and vinegar on their fries?

Here in Canada, it’s common sense, but I heard from some people who went down into the U.S., that even at McDonald’s, they didn’t have vinegar for the customers.

It doesn’t make sense, but these days I’ll believe anything weird about the States.

Well?

  • I live in the exact center of the United States, and here, we use ONLY salt and Ketchup on our french fried potatoes. To use anything else, like some suggested, like mustard (eeewwww), mayonaise, ranch dressing, etc., would be really gross.

I guess what the individual person wants, is OK. But I hope I never see the day when McDonalds starts sprinkling vinegar on the fries…eeewwww…

Sometimes, Canadians can be weird too… they eat whale blubber, don’t they.????

  • Yeah, we Americans have some jacked up taste buds.

Instead of salt and vinegar, our unusual condiments of choice include mayonaise!? , honey mustard, barbecue, and ranch dressing….which is pretty disgusting to me, I just stick with ketchup.

Oh, and usually the fries are barely salted, so you have to add some.

You won’t find any vinegar at McDonald’s, but ask for mayo, they’ll give you a good handful of packets. :/

Canada’s pretty damn cool. I wish we had the choice of salt and vinegar on our fries!

  • It depends on the person. I spent time in London and got into salt and vinegar on fries. But very few if any restaraunts do here unless there is a demand for it * I still also like ketchup on the fries also*. But they have salt/vinegar potato chips and ketchup flavored chips also

  • The fries already have salt on them and we put ketchup on our fries. Why would putting vinegar be common sense? Traditions are different everywhere you go. Vinegar is not provided for the fries. Cheers 🙂

  • I guess that is true then, I’ve never seen any fast food place, such as McDonald’s have vinegar for customers. But maybe if I’d ask, they might have some…

Anyways, yes, it isn’t a common thing for us to put vinegar in our fries, salt is a maybe, but we place ketchup most of the time.

  • I’ve never heard of vinegar on fries. In the US, salt and/or ketchup are the most common things to put on fries. But the restaurant usually gives you separate packets of ketchup and salt so you can decide how much, if any, to put on your fries.

  • WE put salt and ketchup on our fries and to us that is common sense no vinegar unless you go home with you fast food and put vinegar on them it is just abnormal. To us in the U.S the fact that you put vinegar on your fries is weird .

  • We Americans do put salt on our fries however we don’t usually put vinegar on them…and you believe “weird” things about us Americans because we DO NOT use vinegar on our fries? Why be judgmental over something so small????

  • We use salt and ketchup

Do u guys put vinegar on a baked potato too???

Besides ketchup is loaded with vinegar and tastes better than just vinegar

  • Unless you go to a seafood restaraunt more than likely you get stuck with ketchup and mustard choices unless you buy the chicken nuggets at mcdonalds. With choice of sauce.

Ivars and Skippers have vinegar and tartar sauce available for the fries, fish, scallops, clams! Hmmmmm good!
