Is she lying or does this really exist?

I’ve got a teacher who I believe to be a compulsive liar, but I wasn’t sure enough to say anything until this one came out. APPARENTLY their family owns a farm that raises Purple Cows. She claims it’s a special breed that “tastes delicious”, but I wanted to know if anyone had heard of such a thing before I said anything. 🙂

Update:

She claims it’s a Codominance thing between some kind of yellow cow (i dont remember the name) and a black angus, and the color comes out a “Shiny Lavendar”

  • There were some cows that were referred to as blue cows. Paul Bunyan is reported to have had one. They were infrequently seen in Quebec’s eastern townships.

    When I was a child we had several cows that were roan, and many people would call them purple even though we knew they were roan shorthorn. I have never seen a cross between a blue cow and a roan, but I would expect they would be mistaken for purple too.

    Now as to whether your teacher is lying, I never met her, never went to her parents’ farm. But I know that the impression that some roan cows are purple is widespread. Roan certainly can look purple.

  • i don’t know if this can help .but take a look at the text below.

    Codominance

    Both alleles can be expressed

    For example, red cows crossed with white will generate roan cows. Roan refers to cows that have red coats with white blotches.

    This phenotype might seem to support the blending theory. (The blending theory predicts pink F progeny.)

    The F progeny, however, demonstrate Mendelian genetics. When the F roan individuals self-fertilize, the F progeny have a phenotypic ratio of red: roan: white.

    This mode of inheritance is called incomplete dominance.

    The phenotypic outcomes for cow color and incomplete dominance in general can be explained biochemically.

    One allele of the gene codes for an enzyme that functions in the production of the red color. The other allele codes for the gene to make white color. If both alleles are present, both are expressed, resulting in a cow that has some red and some white.

    MendelÕs laws are not compromised here, he just happened to find in peas examples of complete dominance only.

  • There is no such thing as a purple cow.

    But, some black fur does have a purple/blueish sheen to it, but only when the sun hits the hair just right.

  • As to whether she is lying or just pulling your leg I can’t say. There are no bovines that are purple. There are “purple cow” products of various kinds.

    A poem states:

    I’ve never seen a purple cow,

    I never hope to see one

    But I can tell you anyhow,

    I’d rather see than be one.

    Enjoy

  • Hmmmm….I’ve had a purple cow before. I can attest they are absolutely delicious! I’ve also had an orange cow, a pink cow, and a brown cow!

    Grape soda + vanilla ice cream = purple cow

    Orange soda + vanilla ice cream = orange cow

    Strawberry soda + vanilla ice cream = pink cow

    Root Beer + vanilla ice cream = brown cow

    I’ve had them all, and purple cows are hands down my favorite. As for a living breed of cattle that are purple, I’d say your teacher is full of bull$hit.

    By the way, grape soda, and vanilla ice cream (an ice cream soda) really is called a purple cow. Wasn’t teasing you about that.

    So now you know how to make your very own purple cow…you can tell her you’ve had one too, and they are delicious! ~wicked grin~

    The original “Purple Cow,” from I never saw a purple cow;

    I never hope to see one;

    but I can tell you anyhow;

    I’d rather see than be one!

  • The only Purple Cows I have ever heard of are those in the poem:

    I never saw a purple cow

    I never hope to see one

    But if there was a purple cow

    I’d rather see than be one.

    Tell your teacher you ‘get the joke’ but that you felt she was telling a lie in class …

  • my cousins dad and his grandparents run a dairy farm and whenever i go up to visit them i go work on the farm and i no for a fact that they had a cow that was a weird mix that instead of being white and black it was white with purple spots ( they were purple it was not a trick of the light becasue i went and asked my cousin why it looked like it was purple and he said because it is purple.) i dont think you can actually breed them its just sorta what happens with their genetics.

  • Purple Cow is a drive in restaurant in east Tennessee. A great place to eat.
