Is there anything I should know or do to prepare for tennis?

Next year I’m going to High school and I join to prepare for tennis. Is there anything to prepare me or help me do better than not doing anything at all? Swings practice, gain more muscle, cardio to help your stamina, speed etc.

  • Tennis is a *skill* sport. Conditioning is wonderful, it makes you stronger, etc, but it doesn’t make you better at hitting tennis balls. If you want to prepare for tennis, then take tennis lessons at a local facility, and play or practice as often as you can.

If you like working out, then do that *as well as* playing tennis. Working out helps prevent injuries, among other good things 🙂

If you’re looking for a teacher, here are links to three tennis-teaching organizations:

    http://www.uspta.org/

    http://www.ptrtennis.org/

    http://www.mtmca.com/

The web sites above have a function where you can enter your zip code or local area, so that you can find out how to contact any teaching professionals near you.

Best of luck, hope you have some fun with it 🙂

  • Most certainly. I’m assuming you’re talking about conditioning (training the body in preparation or in general). So as a Tennis team player for my high school, I’ve noticed the most important things are:

1: firstly, discipline and motivation. Although these are mental attributes, they are great things to have. You will get frustrated and you need to be able to mess up and be okay about it.

2: Shoulder Strength: As you get deeper and deeper into tennis, you start using a variety of spins, serves, and strokes. Most of these will require you to turn your shoulder, “open” and “close” them, and be able to be flexible with them and keep safe as you perform these strokes.

3: Reflexes and agility. As a tennis player, you will be reacting and situating yourself, and you need to be able to do it quickly and efficiently. Do suicides (where you start at the doubles boundary/court boundary (base), sprint to the inner doubles line/ boundary singles line, run back to base, go to the mid line, back to base, and do that. It’s a grueling process, but it legitimately works.

4: Stamina: You’ll play a lot of pro-set games, and they can last up to hours if you and your opponent are both equal. So make sure you can last, it’s a great thing to have.

5: MOST IMPORTANTLY: DEDICATION AND PRACTICE. Like any sport, it’s not just going to get better overnight. You need to keep setting a time you can practice and you NEED to be strict about it. Unless someones dying, make sure you do it. I find that having an official “partner” making you play works best.

In general, just keep pushing at it dude! Just keep things in order, and keep working. Tennis is a great sport to play, it teaches you many skills you need in life (coping skills, dedication, respect), so by working on your tennis skills, you are that much more successful. Good luck!
