Is this a good idea as an environmental project?

I had a few ideas to propose to my school to improve our environmental impact. I wasn’t sure if they were good though. first i thought maybe during spirit week, we could do a thing where whichever class to recycle the most in their bins, gets a prize. Then I thought maybe we could do a fundraiser with flower pens and stuff and use that money to get more environmentally friendly equipment. are they good ideas? which ones better?

  • Recycling isn’t recycling bins, that’s just collection and it reduces the cost to the manufacturer for using recycled material. In truth, the recycling bins are a fee based collection, the business model is from the fees collected hence if the market for the recyclables are glutted which they often are, the recyclables go to the landfill. Real recycling is buying products made from recycled materials. You may think you’re recycling when you collect recyclables in bins but you are not, you are only fooling yourself into thinking you’ve recycled. If you are looking at the labels of competing products and choosing to buy products made with more recycled materials then you are recycling.

Rather than promote the mistaken belief that you are recycling with a recycling drive, have a display of products made with recycled materials and even sell some. You can show people how to be smart consumers so they actually recycle instead of just thinking they did.

  • Yes. It is good. You can also try planting vegetables to a large amount and you can sell it to people surrounding to your school. First start as a small program, then you can develop this. Making decomposable carry bags, environmental friendly soaps etc. will have good environmental impact and also your school can get lot of advantages from the programs like this. To save our environment you can collect resources from environment itself.
