I've had my laptop for about a year now. How to increase life time and performance?

I’ve purchased my Alienware M14X R2 about a year or half a year ago. I’m not the best at maintaining computers and I really would like to keep this one the longest possible. What should I have done to it in order for me to keep getting the best out of it while it still last?? Also do I need to clean the fans and such out? I’m not sure how to do that.

  • Since this is an Alienware, my guess is that you’ll be gaming on it… Here is how to maximise the longevity of this laptop:

    1. While gaming, switch power profile to high performance and keep the laptop plugged in and sitting on a cooling pad (I recommend dual cooling fans like a Cooler Master NotePal U2)… Don’t game on the laptop for more 90 minutes per day… NOTE: Do not play games in power saver mode as the CPU and GPU in this mode will actually be pushed to the brink…

    2. Once a year, have a professional who services laptops clean dust out of your laptop’s heatsink and other nooks and crannies (don’t go trying to do it yourself or you may end up messing things up)…

    3. While on the go or not plugged in and browsing the net, keep the laptop in power saver profile, reduce display brightness to 25-30% or less… This should maximise battery life…

    4. If you plan on downloading large files like torrents all night, keep the laptop in power save mode, plugged in, sitting on the cooling pad and turn the display off (all Dells have a dedicated button for that) and if no button for that, download a third party software like Redmond to turn off display…

    5. Never ever game while not plugged in or if no cooling pad… When the laptop is not plugged in, always keep it on power saver mode…
