Meditation related question?

What is the difference between concentrative mediation and contemplative? (any and all information you may have on this subject would be greatly appreciated).

Also, when and how do you meditate?

Meaning: In the morning, do you start meditating as soon as you wake up; or do you brush your teeth and freshen up then meditate?

Thanks,

  • I think you’re talking about the difference between insight and calm.

Calming is where you just watch the breath and lets the thoughts and feelings come up and don’t get hooked by them. Just stay with the breath. If you get caught by a thought for a while, when you notice just come back to the breath without judgement.

Insight meditation is where you raise a question at the beginning. you don’t think about it all the way through – you raise a strong interest in the question, perhaps by saying it out loud 3 times, and then drop the question. At the end you review your meditation for things that came up that might relate.

I think it’s better to freshen up before sitting, and also have some brisk exercise, before meditation. You should be awake, not sleepy.

Posture is important – a straight back, shoulders back, a slight smile, and a comfortable position on a cushion or chair so that you don’t need to move around.

  • Meditation can lead to astral projection or an out of body experience, which is good for spiritual growth.
