  • This is a condition called plagiocephaly or brachiocephaly, depending on exactly where the flatness is. It does not get better by itself after 6 months, but a lot of doctors don’t know that. The treatment is called banding, where the baby is in a type of helmet for several months. You can join a Yahoo group called “allaboutplagio” to read about other parents’ experiences and suggestions and to see before and after pictures. To join the group, go to the main Yahoo page, click on “groups” (fourth down on the right), and do a search for “allaboutplagio” or “plagiocephaly.” The bottom line is that you will need to find a provider of the bands to get him evaluated. The evaluations are typically free, and the bands are sometimes paid for by insurance, depending on your insurance and the state. The sooner you do it the better, because he will need to be in a band for much shorter of a time if you start while he is still growing fast; some providers won’t do it at all after 15 months. One place to look for a provider of the bands is the Cranial Technologies website. Another is the OrthoAmerica website: search for providers of “Starbands,” which is their brandname. The third company is called Hanger, so you’d look for a Hanger Band provider. You can make an appointment and get the evaluation on your own, but you will need a pediatrician to write the prescription for the band. If yours won’t, you may need to find another one.
