My husband accidentally dropped my laptop nearly 1 year ago. Are the files still retrievable?

It’s basically completely unusable. I know there are IT companies that can still extract data from broken laptops, but will how long it’s been broken matter? Like what if it collects dust? We have been on a shoestring (these guys charge like £20+!!) but may finally be able to financially afford getting all the data back in the next couple of months. He broke it in August 2012 (on my birthday, of all days. Sigh)

Update:

Hey guys thanks for the quick responses. I did hear of the hard drive method (pretty sure it’s still intact because I was able to log on to my computer and open a folder after the fall before a major error shut the laptop down) but people have said to leave it to the professionals as small amounts of dust can destroy the data. That it had to be done in a dust-free controlled room. 🙁

  • The drop broke the laptop? If yes, did you tried to open the hard drive? It may me still be in good shape. Personally I came across such accidents several times. If your hard disk is broken, no one can guarantee a recovery. But if you hard disk is fine, you can get all the data without paying huge sum to a repair person. So, suggest you inspect the back of the laptop. One square size opening is for hard disk. Open that and try it on a different laptop. You may use a spare laptop or take it to a friendly repair shop. Alternatively use an USB adapter which supports hard disk connections.

Some guys rob people in the name of computer repair. Reality is all things are not that complicated. Try it yourself once.

  • Hello, yes you can still recover all your files from your Laptop. Not sure what your dollar amount is here but look on craigslist.com & others for computer repair service. There’s alot of people that did that for work & are now unemployed working from home plus they can do it while you wait & you can watch them doing it. It won’t take long either. Now another way to save your $$ is buy a exturnal hard drive then retrive your file’s pic’s video etc. Go to www.ehow.com go to there search box & type in ( how to retrive files off a broken computer ) Then click on the first link & maybe others & good luck getting your files back, Jay

Source(s): Used to work on them, reading etc. Thank you.

  • It doesn’t matter how long its been broken, unless your hard drive suffered a major impact wiping the memory instantly. What you need to do is take out the hard drive, buy a new laptop, and put that hard drive in it. It’s really simple and you are being taken advantage of if you pay somebody a lot of money to do that for you.

  • £20 to extract the data off a hard drive? You’ve GOT to be joking! Who are they, back street hoodlums?

Remove the hard drive and put it in a caddy, plug in a USB cable and read it off yourself. Maximum cost about £20 (twenty pounds).

A hard drive is completely sealed so dust can ever get into it. I found a hard drive in a river, took it home and dried it off. It still worked!
