Oil furnace filter element replacement?

I have a General A-A filter element that I change every year. I usually buy the Westwood F- filter element because that’s what Lowe’s sells, but they’re the same thing. My question is, can I use a car oil filter, like a FRAM or Purolator, for my furnace? It would be a lot easier and not as messy. Also, if I can, does anyone know which one it would be, or would I have to size it up? Thanks.

  • No, car engine filters have a bypass that allows % of the oil to go past the filter to insure that oil always gets to vital parts. This works because the oil is circulated so quickly that all of it goes through the filter in a short run time.

It is important that all oil for a furnace pass through a filter. Please continue to follow your annual filter change with the A-A.
