  • Ask yourself why it is Wing Chun that you really want to do. I had the same problem when I tried to begin my martial arts career, presuming that this is your first time. I had my heart set on learning Kung Fu but nobody taught it in my area so I was forced to begin Karate. That was the best thing that could have happened to me and I never looked back. Whatever it is that you end up doing, please don’t learn online. The people teaching that can’t be doing it for the love of teaching and wanting to pass their skills on because they don’t have any students there for them to teach. Money, I suspect, is their main motivation.

My advice it to sit down and objectively view the situation. Are you light and athletic – you may look at something like TKD, or another style of kung fu. Do you like grappling or throwing – Judo, jiu jitsu or aikido might help. Are you well built or strong – maybe you would want to try Karate or boxing.

Obviously it’s your choice, but bear in mind that online lessons can never be a substitute of any form for real teaching. You may feel that what you are doing is right, but without a teacher to watch you and give advice, you may permanently injure yourself.

  • I’m usually all for telling people that you can’t learn a martial art online but one of the biggest downfalls of Wing Chun is the fact that it’s instructed and practiced by morons, uppity a$$holes and Bruce Lee fanboys. Who knows, learning it online might be the best way to go about it.

  • Learning martial arts online is synonymous to learning how to swim via Skype call. It cannot be done. You need to have a physical teacher there to help you and point out your mistakes. Martial arts isn’t something that can be described in a video, unless it is a review. You need peers to discuss your mistakes.

  • Just learn a Martial Art that’s available in your area or save your money to relocate somewhere where its available. Martial Arts are impossible to learn without a teacher.

  • For reference, they are very good. For learning, as with any videos, they are pretty much worthless. You can only learn from a live instructor who can correct your mistakes.
