  • For those who are saying Pacquiao needs volume of punches before he can KO, how would you explain the Mosley knock down? How would you explain the Cotto knock down? If that’s not power then I don’t know what is.

  • Nope! Nobody credible has said he is the reincarnation of Roberto Duran or big George Foreman, but many have rightly stated that he has pop in both hands. You can’t just look at the total number of KO’s to judge the punching power of any fighter because of the many variables that go into KO’s. If you look at his last four fights when that guy connects it stops his opponents and forces then to reset. This is what makes some people scratch their head about him as he fights at welterweight. To go from 108-147 without losing a dimes worth of speed, agility or power defies athletic reality. I personally don’t give a darn because the problem is in every major sport especially football (NFL & NCAA) despite what the naive may think.

@ Those who want to use Manny’s knockdown of Mosley as proof of his power, go to youtube & look at their feet. Mosley’s laziness (in terms of footwork) and Manny’s skill to keep his lead foot outside Mosley’s had more to do with that knockdown than his power. While I don’t agree that his power is overrated, that is a poor example.

  • Yes it is very overrated. He punches so fast and throws so many punches per fight. He overwhelms his opponents with his volume of punches at great speed and they end up in survival mode. His opponents can’t dodge them all and eventually get hit, usually with punches they don’t see coming and those are the ones that hurt the most. Then as the fight goes on his opponents practically gives up fighting and Pacquiao starts hitting them at will with multiple combinations. That’s not power, that’s accumulation of punches but some people don’t understand that.

He knocked down Cotto twice. One was more of a slip than a knock down but because Cotto was hit before he slipped it was counted as knock down. The second one did hurt Cotto because it was a punch from an angle he did not see coming.

He made De La Hoya quit but De La Hoya shouldn’t have even been in the ring to begin with. He was weight drained and that was clear from the opening bell. Pacquiao could do it better than anyone else but many could have made a weight drained De La Hoya quit.

He was hitting Margarito easily up the middle and kept hitting his right eye but Margarito would not go down. If he had the power people think he does then Margarito would have gone down after being hit with all those punches cleanly.

  • At Welterweight it MAY be. He is 5-0 at Welter, but he only knocked out Cotto (which was stopped, not actually knocked out) and De La Hoya (a weight drained old man). I don’t think Pacquiao does it with power when he gets KOs (not alone anyway). He does it with speed and volume. Guys seem to give up because they are getting hit so much and so often. Mosley and Clottey did not fight because of this. Manny’s last fights have been Unanimous Decisions. I have a hunch that the next fight will be more the same…Juan Manuel Marquez has never been knocked out, although I know Manny will be trying hard.

  • 38 kos in 58 fights is a good KO percentage

  • Overrated since most of his opponents in welterweight like mosley, clottey, dela hoya is fighting for survival…You cant rate someones power when his opponents refused to fight…And for the record these fighters are way bigger than pac and fighting for survival…Even cotto is running to survive in that fight…People always misunderstand the punching power of pacquiao because manny is a volume puncher and has a great speed…They always thought that its because of his speed and volume of punches…I dont really think thats the thing, you know there are a lot of fighters who is as quick as pacquiao but cant hurt his opponents cause they dont have the punching power…Muhammad ali is quick but even if he is quick and often hits his opponents if he doesnt have the power to knock people out i dont think he can destroy the face to frazier or knock poorman out…its because of ali’s punching power…Its the punching power that destroys his opponents not the speed, but its mixed…Cause he has that…Mosley will not say i never hit as hard as like that before if pac doesnt have enough power to hurt his opponents…But to some of his opponents who say pac doesnt have the power is that he is so quick and i cant see his punch…Thats BS you know that…Margarito said that, look what happen pac almost knock him out in the early rounds…And maybe in the 10 to 12 rounds if pac did not give him mercy hahhahaha…So for me all those stuff that i’ve heard, read that say pac doesnt have the punching power, damn those people are BS and ignorant…hahahahha…

  • It’s a little bit overrated. Die hard pacquiao fans would have you believe he has foreman like power or something. But the reality is that his knockouts come from speed and accuracy in combo’s rather then crushing power.

  • To say his power is overrated, is an understatement. Pacquiao always had KO power from flyweight to jr. welterweight. Now welterweight is different. He has an average KO power in the welterweight class because we have guy way bigger then him that is walking around 150 to 170 lbs. But to really compare him to all the welterweight guys, yes he got some good KO power for his size at 5’6 weighting 144lbs.

Manny punches are so much different from other boxer. He throw punches in bunches. His punch is very fast with explosive impact because he sit on his punches. He punch with his legs, hip, and twist it on impact. He punch so fast, his opponent dont have time to react to it so when it land, it hurt much more. I think its more like all of his victim underrate his power until they find them self on the canvas and then decided to cover up for the rest of the fight.

  • Up until featherweight he was a fearsome puncher. But as with all puncher weight jumpers, such as Duran, after so long they lose their pop because they’re facing bigger men at higher weights and they’re still throwing lower weight punches.

His power was still decent at lightweight because he gave David Diaz a real *** whupping. He’s still got pop at welterweight but his accuracy and his speed and his flurries are his biggest assets. The Hatton KO was due to catching Ricky off guard and amazing accuracy.

  • He might not have the knockout percentage of Vitali Klitschko, but I don’t think his power’s overrated. He’s dropped four of his last seven opponents at least once, and the three he didn’t drop (Margarito, Clottey, and De La Hoya) all have really solid chins.

His KO percentage is 65%, pretty respectable, especially when compared to the other p4p elite. Mayweather-61%, Martinez-51%, Donaire-64%.
