Please I need help ASAP. I got a month old kitten and she wont eat, she just sleeps. Please help, emergency!!!?

So a day ago, a friend said that her cat gave birth to a litter of 2 and she couldn’t take care of them. One of the kittens died and she wanted to send the survivor kitten to the shelter, in which I am positive they are going to put her down. So I told her that I would adopt kitten, so I got the kitten when she was 3 and a half weeks old. Now at home all she does is sleep, all day. And she wouldn’t eat at all, nothing. People are just saying it is a psychological problem because she isin’t with her mother. I tried force feeding her but I don”t think she is swallowing the food. And I have to make her drink water through a syringe, and also, I don’t know if she is even swallowing the food. Please help, I have no idea what to do. I tear up whenever I see her because of pity. I need to know if she is too young for me to take care, if it is normal for her to sleep all day and not eat at all. By the way, I got her exactly a day ago, just if this helps with anything. I appreciate all answers, but if you are not 1% sure about your answer, please don’t make it a risk for me to follow it. Thanks.

  • She needs to be bottle fed with KMR every 3 hours or so. That’s why she is so lethargic – she needs nutrition and that is in the form of kitten formula. Without that she’s going to be dead in a day or so.

  • You are obviously clueless about new born kitten care. Get to Pet Smart or Pet Co ASAP. Get KMR. Kitten replacement milk and a couple of bottles. Mix up a batch making sure it is the temperature of your wrist then place the baby on your lap – wrap her in a towel to keep her warm- and bottle feed her. It may take a while to get her to eat. She is probably half starved and dehydrated. To begin with she may only take a small amount at a time so feed her hourly until she starts taking a couple of ounces at a time. That may mean hourly feeding for a couple of days. Then feed her every 4 hours 24/7. No she can not be left unfed while you go to work or school. After feeding she needs to be burped. Hold her in the palm of your hand belly down and very gently pat her back until she burps. Now you have to stimulate urine and feces production. Use a course terry cloth wash cloth damp not sopping wet with warm water and gently wipe her face belly and then pay attention to her private parts. Do this over a sink because she will urinate and eventually defecate. Do not hold her like a baby when feeding.

She will aspirate the formula and literally drown. Keep her warm at all times close to your body as much as possible. Cold is a big threat to infants. When you are not holding her put a heating pad set on low under a nice layer of towels. Check frequently. Most heating pads have an automatic shut off. Also make sure it is not too hot. Plan on bottle feeding her every 3 to 4 hours for the next couple of weeks then every 6 hours for another 2 weeks. You have probably taken on more than you can handle. If you have to leave the house for more than 3 or 4 hours then you can not care for this kitten. Call your local animal control and ask for information about animal rescue. Pet Smart and Pet Co also have rescue contacts. Word of warning. They rarely take new born kittens. By taking the kitten away from her mother you have probably condemned her to death. She should have been left with the mother.

If at all possible return her to the mother. Promise your friend that you will adopt her when she is 8 weeks old. She may survive that way as long as the mother is still lactating, which she should be.

BTW – I am 2% sure about my answer. I have raised abandoned kittens as young as 3 days old.

Because you do not know how to care for a newborn you have done more harm than good. I know you menat well but you have no idea how to care for a new born kitten. You are kind hearted and have good intentions. Net time back up your intentions with knowledge for both your sake and the cat’s sake.

    Thanks for trying

  • the kitten is MUCH too young to be away from it’s mother. Kittens need milk from their mum (not shop milk) until they are about 5 weeks old as it has specific nutrients which they need to grow and build their immune systems. You can buy whiskers kitten milk from certain shops as well as kitten food. (food is not the best idea at this age though. it needs to be introduced slowly and watered down into a creamy past as they cannot chew)

You can use a syringe filled with this milk and push it into the side of the kitten’s mouth (in little bits) then rub under their chin to make them swallow.

My cat,1yr, dfidnt eat for a day when i first got him as he was in shock from the moving of enviroments. this may be the case here, however i would not risk it with a kitten. If you are very concerned then you should deffinately consult your vet and ask for more info and whether or not you should bring in the kiitten to be looked at. i hope this helped! good luck!

  • What kind of food exactly? Cause im pretty sure youre not suppose to give kittens FOOD. All they will drink at that age is milk
