Problem with my 2007 ninja 250 staying running?

so i have a problem with my ninja 250, it won’t stay running, it starts right up, i have the choke on and everything, then if i start letting the choke down slowly, it stalls out and it’s really hard to start back up, i thought it was the battery so i replaced it, but still the same, i have to have the choke on for like 10min before i can turn it off completely, and then the bike will stay on, i know the guy before me had the bike in the garage in the winter, and didn’t take out the old fuel, so maybe the carbs need to be cleaned, is there a way maybe to put seafoam in the bike, cause i have a whole bottle, i took it to work the other day, it was running at full choke at about 70rpm, then the rpm went down really fast and it stalled out, someone please help

  • Sounds like your typical “needs maintenance” used bike. Thankfully the 250 is an easy bike to work on. For me, I give all used motorcycles a complete service before riding to clear these little issue up, take a look at the list (there are links to info on each ~ sorry for all the links, just WAY more information over on the Ninja 250 FAQ):

The important ones to starting and running are making sure the valve clearance is correct (as that gets tighter the bike becomes harder to start until you can’t start it at all), that info is here:

    http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/How_do_I_ad…

Then it’s onto the carbs for a good cleaning (and just like you can’t expect clean teeth by swishing just Listerine, you can’t get carbs clean with just chemicals/compressed air, there needs to be some mechanical method of scraping things off.. like flossing):

Might as well have the battery on a tender while you’re doing this work, to charge it if it’s just low and the newer style of chargers can actually recondition some batteries:

Thought it may be dead/dying and in need of replacement:

Don’t forget to inspect the air filter too:

And the spark plugs…. there’s something important to know about those. DON’T use Champion branded plugs.

As you can see, lots of info, but all very easy tasks. If you’re anxious about any part, you could always hop on the forums there and see if there’s someone close who’ll go through it with you. There are a few folks on there who’ve been around them for 10~20 years, have rebuilt many, know all the maintenance backwards and forwards, etc… Anyway, the above will almost certainly get your bike sorted and running well for the summer.

  • sounds like your pilot jets and or passages are clogged……which means you will need to take the float bowls off…so you can access the jets and clean out passages…..i would soak jets over night…..then blow out all passages in carbs….like the tiny o es in front of the butterflies…..and blow out wifh compressed air

after cleaned…..i would put a capful or two of seafoam in every full tank…atleast when not riding alot
