question about 3D/4D ultrasounds?

Tonight I’m getting a 3D/4D ultrasound and it’s going to be pretty expensive so I’m a little hesitant. I’m worried that the photos won’t turn out good and it will be a waste of a lot of money. Have you had a 3D/4D ultrasound or has someone you know had one? Were you happy with the results, did the pictures turn out nicely? Some people find them creepy because you see so much detail and it’s a little weird. For those who have had one did seeing your baby in so much detail freak you out a little? Just curious… thanks!

Update:

Also, I’m 27 weeks along-is that a good time to have this done? She’s moving around a lot lately so I figured that would help get some good photos.

  • I had lots of them done with my second child. I have high risk pregnancy due to a clotting disorder. So every two to three weeks from the time I was 18 weeks until I delivered I had to a have an ultrasound. My doctor would always do a couple of minutes of 3D and 4D at the end of the appointments just for fun.

The best pictures I got were at 27 weeks. 24 and 30 weeks were good to, but 27 was the best. Babies tend to be filled out in the face enough and their is also generally enough room to get a good picture. My daughter picture was amazing. It looked exactly how she looked when she was born.

And as far as movement. You want them to move some but not a lot. My baby was a huge mover and sometimes it was difficult to get a good 4D shot because of that.

  • Yes, or a copy of the ultrasound results from your record. Most of the 3d ultrasound places want to see one of these as proof that you are being seen by a doctor for prenatal care. Reason behind this is because these 3d/4d ultrasound places are not for medical diagnosis and they don’t want people using them in that fashion. All you should have to do is stop by your OBs office and speak to the nurse at the desk to either get a copy of your ultrasound pic or results, or to get a note on official letterhead stating that you are under pre-natal care and the doctor should sign it. I did one of these 3d/4d ultrasounds about 2 weeks ago and brought a picture from my 18 week ultrasound. I definately think the 3d/4d was worth it! Best of luck to you!

  • I am having one in Nov and I cant wait! I dont find it creepy at all! The ones I have seen, I could see resemblances to the parents in some pics, like dads lips or moms nose, it is really amazing! it is expensive but you need to look at what you get for your money. where I live, for $2, you get a cd with at least 30 pics, 2 printed off pics, a dvd of the whole session which is 30 min to 45 min, find out the sex if you want to know and if the sex cant be determined at the time because of the view you can come back for free and find out later, and you get to give the email addresses of 4 people who can click on a link and watch live feed of the ultrasound while you are having it done which is good for say grandparents or godparents or whoever you choose. I also chose for an extra $25 to get a heartbeat bear, which they record the babys HB onto a sound box, put it into a teddy bear, and then you simply push a spot on the bear and it plays the heartbeat. Any time the soundbox may stop working they will replace it for free. And if you like they also do a website (private) for your baby with the photos and whatnot at no extra cost. If the pics dont turn out because of baby’s position or whatnot, you can go back for free and have it redone. This is why I think it is worth it, where I live anyway, to get it done. Plus, imagine showing your child when they are older the pics of what they looked like in mommy’s belly!

I will be around 28 or 29 weeks when I have it done, so 27 weeks is good, because they told me around these times there is more detail, easier to tell sex, and it is closer to what the baby will look like when he/she is born.

  • I was also hesitant about having that done with my daughter. She was pushed up against my uterine wall and wouldn’t move to get a really good picture. Overall, I’m glad I had it done because we did get some pretty cool pictures of her (not as clear as some peoples) and it was reassuring to have proof that she really was a girl. I was stressing a little cause sometimes the docs are wrong about the baby’s gender at the normal ultrasounds.

  • I received mine free because I’m diabetic (high risk). I believe you should get one after 20 weeks because I had mine at 14 Weeks and the baby looked like a warped worm/human. It was a bit freaky. You can see the pic here: http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c47/satine8/BABY… Sorry the pic is blurry…this was actually the cell phone pic I took of the actual photo.

After seeing the 3Ds of older babies…I can see the difference and find it well worth the wait.
